Objectives: Degenerative diseases

1. Degenerative diseases characterized primarily by cerebral cortex lesions:  For each of the following diseases, describe (as appropriate) etiology/pathogenesis of lesions, location of lesions, clinical features and course of the disease, diagnostic tests, inheritance pattern and genetic mechanism, gross pathology, microscopic pathology

  • Alzheimer disease
  • Pick disease (frontotemporal dementia)
  • Dementia with Lewy bodies

2. Degenerative diseases characterized primarily by basal ganglia lesions:  For each of the following diseases, describe (as appropriate) etiology/pathogenesis of lesions, location of lesions, clinical features and course of the disease, diagnostic tests, inheritance pattern and genetic mechanism, gross pathology, microscopic pathology

  • Huntington disease
  • Parkinson disease; parkinsonism syndrome
  • Wilson disease
