Case 3: Question 1

A 46-year-old man complained of radiating pains in his legs and back. He said both legs were very sensitive to touch. Examination revealed only the following (there was no weakness; pain sensation was not tested):

  • bilateral loss of vibratory sense and proprioception in both lower extremities
  • bilateral loss of knee and ankle reflexes
  • wide-based gait with slapping of the feet to the ground
  • urine retention
